  • vray physical camera distortion doesn't render??

Hey friends, I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong here....I'm animating objects over a background image that has obvious lens distortion. I'm using distortion in the vray camerato compensate and modeling with that view. But the objects render without the distortion!

Can somebody tell me what the workflow is here? I thought that the distortion feature would simulate the distortion in the render. Thanks for any advice.

Can you perhaps post a simple scene here? It should work fine, but there may be something else going on in your case.

    Best regards,

Keep in mind that the "distortion" shown in the viewport doesn't match the distortion that's computed during the rendering due to limitations in the max viewports.

Thanks for the reply Vlado, I wish I could post the scene in question, but it's the property of the client. I ended up faking the perspective/distortion to match the plate. It's a still cam with CG elements added on top, so I can get away with it. (So far).

But I really would like to know more about the implementation of lens distortion in the vray camera, the docs don't tell much.

And, considering the response of dlparisi above, I am told

"Keep in mind that the "distortion" shown in the viewport doesn't match the distortion that's computed during the rendering due to limitations in the max viewports."

So if that's the case, I really don't have a clue about how the lens distortion in the vray camera would be useful.

If you like I could post some jpegs of what I'm getting. Might that help to diagnose?

Thanks for the attention, I look forward to understanding this better.

It will be useful, certainly. Also, it is not necessary to post the entire scene - just the camera with some objects in it (could be planes and such instead of the real geometry).

The distorition is shown correctly in RT (if you have that) so you could tweak it there. Otherwise, I think some of the camera tracking solution out there can determine the proper distortion value based off the actual footage. To be honest though, I don't really use the distortion much.

Sorry I've been away for some days, but jobs frequently interfere with research. This issue is still alive, and I hope you will stay tuned; I will post jpegs as time allows.

As always, thanks very much for your time and attention.

I needed to make some changes to an animation scene we did, had the same problem. turnes out that if the camera is hidden, the Distortion doesnt work...

Works just fine for me with a hidden camera.

Really? So maybe something is wrong with my vray, When hidding the camera and from hide by catagory the distortion is reset to zero, in the view port as well as the render. Click image for larger version

FYI - I'm on max 2011x64 and vray 2.10.01. Also it looks like you're using lens shift not distortion, right? I tried hiding the camera with lens shift and didn't have any problems either. Anyone else?

Sorry, my bad. Mixed the lesns shift with the distortion... hiding the camera doesn't effect the distortion.
                          thanks for the reply
