      Personaly, I use Scanline to render out the Z info.

        Haven't used 'defocus dei', but, first make sure Z buffer is selected in G Buffer panel. Other than that, as far as I'm aware there's not much to configure. In any case, I have been able to use Z buffer to simulate DOF with Vray and After Effects with reasonably good success.

        I usualy render out one frame, and then get the Z buffer info using the color picker in 3ds max render output. Right click on area that needs to be the far range of DOF, and write down the Z for that pixel. Do the same for the area that you want to be near range of DoF.

        In compositing program type in your Near / Far range and the DOF radius, and you should be set. If you want to animate DOF change, you need to do the above process for all the key frames where DOF is supposed to change, test and see how it works out.

        Don't bother looking for Z buffer channel within 3DS Max viewer, as this feature appears to be broken (Max problem I believe, not Vray). In most cases it will display just blank image even though there is Z buffer info present.

          hey !!

          thanks...
          @Rerender : yes, it's a good idea but on the image i only use a hdri lightning so using scanline seems to me giving no result exept if i "redraw" the light direction from the shadow i have on Vray render, but will try next time

          @Eldar : thanks looks clear
