  • mudbox demo, workflow with vrayptex?

im playing round with mudbox for the first time. ive created a wierd blobby thing, set up ptex, and drawn on it like a child (i did say first time) ive tried "send to max" which just didnt do anything. then i exported selected as an fbx. i also right clicked on the texture layer and saved it as a ptex.

opened mesh fbx in max, assigned vray material, added vrayptex map and loaded the saved ptex file.

in the material preview i can see a few faces with colour on them, but most are black.

when i render i get no texture at all.

i then tried saving the level 9 subdivided mesh as a displacement ptex for a level 5 mesh. exported level 5 mesh to max, put vraydisp. modifier on it and loaded the displacement ptex file. i get -a result- but its -nothing like- the object. looks like all the tiles of the ptex are in the wrong order and there are only a few there. random gibberish basically.

as a newb i fully expect i just dont understand the workflow yet. but i cant find much documentation on this workflow anywhere.

apologies if this is a mudbox question and should be in "take 5"

I'm doing a short tutorial for Mudbox > PTex at the moment, hopefully it will make things more clear.

Just two things though - one, you can't smooth the mesh in the normal way in 3ds Max, as it will mess up its topology (however you can use VRayDisplacementMod in "Subdivision" mode); and two - for the same reason the texture preview in the Material Editor will be messed up.

    Best regards,

great.. been looking for a tut like that.. to be honest its pretty much what i did, but i used fbx for file transfer. is obj a better bet?

strangely i tried with the same files the next day and it seemed to work much better, although the displaced version didnt match very well. the smoothing of the base mesh didnt match. i guess the "smooth target models" option in mudbox may help with that.
