I'd just like to add that the rule of thirds, golden ratio, etc. is overrated.

@marc:i see so many strange compositions and don't think it is overrated. especially in archviz, a lot of guys have an architectural background
but no clue about image composition...
i consider it a starting point and think that cgartists can learn a lot from such simple guidlines.
i agree if someone is capable to think and has a good sense for proportions, symmetries and space it is not needed.
the same applies to colour and light btw...it not as easy as it seems

on this topic i have to agree with marc, those things are way overrated.

but as you say nlo, you have to have an eye for composition, light an color to get good results of course. the architectural background or interest on the other side is a thing which i find very important for good archviz. this are only my 2 cents but only this way you can probably effectively communicate what the architects wants to tell with his images...

otherwise you get those ***mailbox in closeup with strong DOF and house in background/dirt on the sidewalk and entranceway more in focus than the building/tilted cam and car in front/whatever but at least a cool used-look dirtmap on the facade*** kind of strange archviz image madness you find in half of those evermotion contests and stuff like that. sorry for that little excursion!

            anyway,

have a good 2012 you all!

            cheers,

            christoph.
