  • vray sun + hdri

Is it possible to see the vray sun when using an hdri? I have both visible, but I can't see the sun, which I have positioned rising over a building.

    Hi,

Yes you can, how big is your sun? It could be too small. Also the exposure will affect what you see. Have a look here at a tutorial I wrote http://www.mintviz.com/tutorials/hdr...ing-with-vray/. It covers aligning the V-Ray sun to the HDR image.

I have the sun 4x the size and I can see it when my hdri is off. When I turn the hdri on it's gone. I'll take a look at your link. thanks!

how have you put in your hdr?

are you mapping it onto an inverted sphere or vray dome light?

may have the sun behind it.

The sun will only be visible as part of the VRaySky texture. If you use a HDRI, it is supposed to already include the sun disk.

This is something I was trying to figure out a couple of days ago.

Vray Sky is ok but has no cloud formation, so the sun is never obscured by clouds

HDRI sky domes as lighting is very accurate, but the sun disc, is fixed and so cannot go from sunset to sunrise

You cannot mix the two and even if you could, the sun would always appear in front of any clouds, which would be very unrealistic and the sky would not change as the sun rises and falls

The ideal feature would be to have clouds generated in the vray sky, but whether that would ever become a feature of the Vray Sun/Sky system, is a whole other question

                  Would be amazing though.

When we do this we just make large noise flattened spheres as shadow objects hanging in the sky - you can use their visibility properties to make them thinner.

Did anyone request this in the wishlist?
cinema4d has an amazing system to create sky and clouds. Would love to see it implemented in vray.

I have requested that many years ago. I think everyone gave up on the idea.

I spent nearly *two years* developing PoCs for that, so no, it has not been forgotten, and neither was it initiated by a user request.
It's simply not ready, tech-wise, for primetime (we'd like for you to render that stuff quickly, if it was at all possible.).
