  • Do Vray proxies work with volume lights?

I'm trying to get shafts of light to come through the leaves of a tree in a forest scene, I'm getting some weak shafts with VrayEnvironmentFog and some strong ones with a volume light on a direct spot but only with a mesh tree. On a Vray proxy I'm getting no results at all on the volume light (which is the method I'd rather go with as it's giving me my best results).

I know vray proxies don't respond to things like displacement so do they not respond to volume lights either?

They work fine with volume lights, at least in my tests. What is the light by the way? V-Ray sun or something else?

    Best regards,

really? I've tried in 2 separate scenes now and got nothing. I'm using a vray proxy tree with a targeted direct spot light. Shadows are set to shadow map (512 resolution) and the light is assigned to the volume light. when I render, the tree doesn't even cast a shadow, never mind light streaks. The mesh tree in the sme scene works fine.

Have you tried using raytraced shadows? It's probably just the shadow map.

Yeah, I've tried all available shadow types, none work.

Would be good to post a scene then so that we can check what's going on.

            Best regards,

You mean the .max file or just a render? I can show a test view below, yellow objects are vray proxies (freshly made) reds are mesh objects. Lights are standard targeted spots with shadow map shadows (2 sided shadows enabled) and a volume light added. Rendered in vray 1.5 sp5 (max 2012)

Just did a quick test here.
                - Seems like VrayProxies do not cast any shadows when shadow type is set to "shadow map", no matter wether volume light is enabled or not
                - Raytrace shadows don't work at all (renders black, or with the Volume light on it renders with black holdouts, but geometry is not casting any atmospheric shadow)
That both is no problem at all, because we have VrayShadow & VrayShadowMap to be used with vray, but:
                - VrayShadow & VrayShadowMap: Shadows work, but no volume light at all
                tested on vray 2.20.03

                Best regards,
                Michael

Yes, it's a bit unfortunate as shadow maps don't work with proxies, and VRayShadows and VRayShadowMap don't work with volume lights. We can fix the second issue though - if you are interested, please email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com and we'll try to get you a fix.

                  Best regards,
