  • Does comping channels to get beauty pass only work on 32bit?

    Hi all

Can I only comp the various channels back up to get my original beauty pass if the channels are 32 bit?
So you can't do it at all if it's 8 bit or 16 bit?
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

A lot of it depends on how your compositor works and whether it does a correct "add" or not, also I've found the current version of the raw reflect, refract and their filter passes don't add up to the correct versions - they're similar but not 100% accurate.

What's going on here? Is VRay going backwards now?
How we suppose to do our work if we constantly have to hack our way around problems?
Or no wait, did the previous versions of those channels work the way they should, or has it never worked in the 1st place?

Can you reasonabaly get the same results with AE that you can with NUKE? (I've already given up on photoshop)

It will realy help if chaosgroup have a list of common software people use, and let us know how with that paticular software we are suppose to do things (ok I've just read that sentance and it makes no sense)
      Kind Regards,
      Morne

The normal channels are totally fine, it's just the raw versions as regards the reflections / refractions and as far as I know they've never totally behaved - thankfully you've got the standard reflection and refraction element and they work fine, admittedly with less control than what you'd get by having the raw and filter elements. After effects is slightly less powerful than nuke in this case as it doesn't have a "divide" function - you're able to use this to make your own raw reflection which works slightly better than the built in one. The current passes though offer you nearly everything you'd expect or want, but what was interesting was Rob Nederhorst in a talk on Priest that he was lead compositor on is that he'd always try to spend more time on the 3d so that the raw renders were as close as possible, and then used compositing to add all of the grain, optics, glows and subtle colour corrections and balances that aren't possible in 3d!

The aardman guys are getting what they want by making their own ref passes in nuke:

Photoshop you're screwed for though since it doesn't have a divide. It's actually a pretty bad package for comping in!

Yes I've been following that thread also.

I'm not sure what you mean however with "32 bit, raw and non raw dont work". Could you maybe rephrase it a little?

Photoshop has Divide (since CS5 I believe). What's it with all the Photoshop bashing?
Is it a compositor - No. Can you compose render elements - sure. You have to know your way around jut like in Nuke or any other software.

The problems you get with the RAW elements are the same in all packages. If you need to multiply then trouble starts.

                    Best Regards

Just things like the handling of alphas and not previously having divide made it a bit messy!

Now you've confused me even more. You agree with what joconnel said about about ALL the raw passes and filter passes not working.
But now are you ALSO saying that in addition to this, the normal reflection / light /etc etc in other words ALL others also doesnt work?

So is there anything that works?

Can I build up my beauty pass using my other passes if they are only 8 bit?

I dont understand what you are trying to say. It seems you are saying that nothing works no matter if it is 8,16 or 32 bit.

Please could you once again rephrase what you are saying, or elaborate a bit?!
                        Kind Regards,

Im saying exactly that. U cant comp beauty out of passes, it will always looks different, quick fix is to merge them all and substract from beauty to get missing parts, or just do this here > http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...thout-fringing

                            totally confused !!!

ok but is that only to get the raw passes to work correct?

I don't understand what is suddenly happening???!!!
What about all the tutorials all over the net (although they were for vray 1.5 and earlier) that shows how to comp elements, like for example this famous one by Chris Nichols http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...ender+elements

Is all this now suddenly broken in VRay 2.0? Did I just woke up from a coma and missed couple of years. It feels like I'm in the dark ages when they just invented VRay and just now they invented elements and they still trying to see why they would need it and how to make it work???
                            Kind Regards,

Guys, please do more research before blasting the workings of vray. Pass system does work, we use it all the time. There are some limitations, but nothing that can't be solved.
