license/dongle question -when does Vray check for license?

Hi,
We have a renderfarm, 2 dongles on a license server with 4 licenses on each, and 10 users. We never have a problem obtaining a license, even with 10 users, so we're wondering when Vray checks for a license? We're wondering, because IT wants to add "unused" licenses to a third dongle on a different license server in case the primary server crashes, etc. Does that make sense, or is there a better way to implement disaster recovery?

V-Ray checks for a license whenever you open the render settings dialog, and whenever a rendering is started.
