I went to the erco website and it seems that they have eliminated the i-drop technology that allowed you to drop the erco light fixtures into max/viz models. does anyone know what is going on?

don't worry it's still there.
not a bug but a feature - we decided to put the idrop elsewhere, let me explain: as you know there are thousands of ies-files/products, so choosing the right one is not that simple, no matter if its for a real building or for 3d. so, it's integrated in the main search engine now, which is far more powerful than the dropdowns before.
try this:
1. go http://www.erco.com
2. click "products' in top navigation
3. search for a product (you'll see what i meant with powerful...)
4. when you narrowed down the search, click on the article number you want
5. a new window with a pdf should open
6. next to the pdf click on 'VIZ/MAX i-drop
7. drag icon into viewport as usual (activate autogrid!)
8. render (make sure you checked right scale and log. exposure)
there you go
hope that helps, aksel.

btw:
who is interested in the matter, there is a real gem hidden on the erco-site.
there used to be a very well known book about lighting design, theory, practise, different applications etc. in printed form, which was very hard to get a hand on in the past. since internet-times its available for free as a pdf download. so if you always wanted to know what happens perceptually with dark surfaces or whats the best way to light a shop or a museum, here you go:
http://www.erco.com/download/data/30...chtplanung.pdf
enjoy...
