  • Latest VRay manual rocks

    Hi,

I'm currently thoroughly reading the latest VRay manual from the registered users download section at the VRay site. I'm really happy with the docs. Have been referencing the very old manual for 1.0 for a long time. Can't wait for the manual to be completely finished (it still misses a number of topics), but it's already very helpful in understanding a lot of VRay's parameters and options.

Thanks for this very useful manual update, Peter, Tedi and Vlado!

    Cheers,

    Metin

By the way, I've got a new expression in my VRay vocabulary, thanks to the new VRay manual ... "surface acne"! Never heard of acne anywhere else than on a (skin) surface by the way.

    Cheerio,

This reminds me of something. In my finalRender days we had to cope with a problem causing tiny black spots on a rendered surface. We called that "Fliegenschiss". Translated from German to English that means "fly-shit".

I'm sure there are some finalRender veterans around here that have to wipe away a tear of melancholy when reading the word "Fliegenschiss".

            hi metin !

I didn't know they had updated the manual !!!
I must go to see that even if it's not finished yet.

Well, the word "acne" is quite good to see what it represents...
It's easier to understand than "Fliegenschiss" or another bulgar
word.So thank you the team to translate the vocabulary in an
international language. What about Korean people, Chinese russian
who have some difficultes in this language ??

Acne in french is acné, it's easy !!!

I' ve never used Finalrender, there were many german words ??
            So bad !

            Bye !

              Howdy Gafl,

I guess next time I see an adolescent plagued by acne I will advise to him to stop using Clearasil and simply increase the displacement precision in his DNA displacement or change his face bias.

In case someone here has acne, the above is just a stupid Metin-joke. I don't want to offend anyone.

              Cheers,

              Metin

A remark about the latest manual: in the anti-aliasing samplers example section the "Color treshold" is mentioned several times, as a tool to increase texture sampling accuracy. But the only "Color treshold" value is in the GI section of the render dialog. The two-pass and adaptive sampler both only have a "Treshold" spinner. This might be quite confusing.

                Cheers,

The Threshold in the AA parameters is also a color threshold, but I agree, it should be changed either in the manual or in the rollout itself.

Some more remarks regarding the new VRay manual ...

The Face Subdivs part of the Displacement Modifier section mentions that the modifier automatically creates a bump map for details that are not actually displaced. But if your material already has a bump map, will the automatic bump map be generated anyway? And if so, doesn't that cause unnecessary overhead?

A lot of functions are explained in a technical matter, but don't mention practical info, like if the rendering speed increases or decreases with the value and what the advantages and disadvantages are. With some functions (like the Precalc Level of the Displacement Quadtree Cache) it's not even clear if it's better to increase or decrease the value. It'd be great if every function / option / value that's described gets a little standard addition (maybe a standard textbox at the bottom of each function) that sums up practical info like:

                      Value increase pro:
                      - higher efficiency of the quadtree cache
                      - faster rendering

                      Value increase con:
                      - higher memory usage

The Precalc level and the acceleration options for 3d displacement specifically have been dropped for the internal release and will not be present in future versions; as for the bump map - it's more of a normals map, which is based on the ideal displaced surface. Any material bump maps are layered on top of that.

                          Thanks Vlado,

One more question: will the view-dependent displacement mentioned in the current manual be present in Vray 1.1? Maybe the new fur is already based upon that?

                          Cheers,

                          Metin

P.S.: Can't wait to check out VRay 1.1 and write a new review for MetinSeven.com!

metin: the new displacement is already in the internal build, but the fur isn't based on that
