  • Gradual slowdown - hair

    I have a scene (just one character) that always starts rendering at under 1 minute per frame, but takes a few seconds longer and longer each time a frame is rendered. Then I stop the scene, reboot the computer, and start it up from where it left off, and it renders quickly again, and slows down again.

    The only thing that makes this scene different from other scenes in this project is that the character has Max Hair applied. Any tips?

    Hi,

    Have you ever tried to use Dynamic mode for Default Geometry which is in System tab. It is Auto in default.

      Which 3ds Max version is this? Have you noticed in the V-Ray log which part is slower (i.e. the region rendering itself, or the scene preparation times)?

        I had similar situation where with Hair&Fur I have a "scene setup" phase double longer in time than without it.

        Is it regular??

          It's been a while since I started this thread. I thought I was done with the project, but they just requested that I re-render the animations MUCH larger, so the problem is kind of a big deal now.

          I played with the Default Geometry mode and found it rendered a little quicker with dynamic, but still slowed down. Or... it's kind of hard to tell. Every time I try to render this thing I get different results and it's driving me insane. There's also a tiny area on the scalp that takes forever when her head is tilted down.

          Vlado, I want to send the scene to you so you can check it out. Do you have a machine with BonesPro on it? If you don't I guess I could just delete the body and leave the CAT rig. One weird thing with the hair on this character is that it's not applied to the character's mesh. Instead it's applied to a couple groups of splines that are linked to the head bone. I had never seen that before.

            Update: I reduced the amount of hairs by half and the world is a nice place to be now. I guess the guy who made the model went a bit overboard on that, and I just didn't have enough memory to handle it all. But at half the hair count she looks pretty much the same and my rendertimes are very consistent now.
