  • Camera Film Gate Question as compared to 4x5 technical camera

I come from a commercial photography background and am trying to get my head around proper settings to simulate what I create in the studio. I am rendering to the 4x5 / 8x10 ratio at the 4096x3277.

Is the Output Size and Aperture Width related to the V-Ray Still Cam film gate and focal length? In other words, in the studio, I might prefer to shoot a product with a telephoto lens, so I assume this might translate to a 90mm focal length and a 36mm film gate for my V-Ray Still camera. But does the output choice of 4x5/8x10 4096x3277 and an Aperture Width of 88.90 make the resulting image less telephoto, or skew my lens/film gate choice?

Another question is what the settings might be to accurately match that of my medium format back. The sensor size on the back is 44mm x 33mm. I genrally use a 90mm lens with it which gives me the equivalent to a 77mm lens on a 35mm full-frame camera. Incidentally, 44mm x 33mm is proportioned very similar to 8x10. So if I were to select a film gate of 44mm and a focal length of 77mm and output of 4x5/8x10, would that be about the same perspective as when I shoot digitally? What about the aperture width?

    Thanks in advance!

Changing the render proportions doesn't affect the field of view at all. All it does is crop or add to the top and bottom of the image. Yes, if you are using a MF sensor of 44mm width then that will be your film gate, with a focal length of 90mm. The aperture width setting is the equivalent of the film gate setting for standard max cameras, so you don't need to change that.

Excellent! Thank you for confirming all of that!
