Pixar relaxing patent rules on Subdiv Technology.

I remember a few times when Vlado has said that he's not been able to do a few things because of Pixar owning patents on some subdiv technologies. With this recent announcement by Pixar to make their subdiv technology released does this bode well for some new technologies in Vray?

Yes. But they will not be a complete replacement for the native V-Ray subdivisions.

In the recent nightlies, there is an option to make them Catmul-Clark compatible, though in most cases, the differences are negligible. We still don't support creasing though.

Would having a native meshsmooth/turbosmooth modified for VRay make any sense at all? Somewhat like the VRaysphere? where it's subdivided at rendertime as needed and just provides a regular preview in the viewport?

Well, it's somewhere on the "to do" list to preview the VRayDisplacementMod modifier in the viewports...
