  • What are some good sites to find HDRI's?

All that I really know about is http://www.pauldebevec.com/Probes/ and http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/archive.html, which are both amazing...just wondering if there are any other sites out there for free ones.

      ^ Agreed, those are superb.

Peter Guthries HDRi's are excellent too, and extremely varied.

          I just bought Peter Guthrie's Pack 05 from 3docean.net yesterday. They're excellent.

Here's a good example of how varied Peter's skies are. And they're big enough to be able to use on most renders as a background. If not, he also supplies back plates derived from the HDRI's

agree with the above comments about peter's hdris. I bought a few and basically used only those since then. and they recently got updated too, which was great from his part. and yes, they're big enough you can even get away using them directly as backplate in some cases.

Thanks guys. Glad you appreciate the update Rivoli, updating them all (primarily to remove the buildings and trees on the horizon) was not much fun I can tell you!

I also included DNG versions of all the backplates so that you can have a bit more leeway in adjusting the exposure to your render. The files are DNGs but with lossy compression to keep the total file size down. Any feedback on that would be appreciated.

Usually I don't mind if the sky is slightly soft, as the focus is on the building or object anyway. Here is a 4000x4000px example I just rendered so you can pixelpeep: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pg/7948...ream/lightbox/ (click view all sizes for 4000px version) Maybe if I were doing a final image where so much of the image was sky then I might replace it. For dusk images you can always argue that there would be a bit of movement due to long exposure time

They have the smart IBL tool and a vast archive of smart IBL packages, which is -> HDRIs...

yes I can imagine that, especially as you have many on sale now. it's another proof of the great care you put into making them.

Peter, do you suggest or do you ever reduce the resolution on them to use for your dome light setup or use the full resolution directly?

I just purchased one from CG-Source, and it's very good (http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...highlight=hdri) I am sure Peter's are equally as nice.

                          Sorry Colin, missed this.

I always use them at full res. Not sure if there really are any benefits to using lower res ones for GI these days, and I'd certainly rather have more detailed lighting if at all possible. You would lose any nice shadows made by the sun for sure.

Yeah, alright. I'm trying to reduce the amount of noise I'm getting on an interior when I use one in a dome light. What do you set your subdivs of your dome to, and what do you specify as the "resolution" on the dome light? How are you reducing your noise from them? Denoising through the DMC sampler or some other way?

                            Thanks Peter.
