  • Using an VrayAmbientLight with GI -- why? how?

I apologize if this has been asked before, but a quick search didn't find anything obvious.

I don't understand why/when/how you would use VrayAmbientLight with GI.

It has the GI and Direct option, so I assume it's designed for using with GI too -- but I thought the whole point of the ambient light was to simulate GI. Wouldn't it create overblown lighting situations if used in conjunction with GI?

Thus far, I've always used VrayAmbientLight only to fake GI and general skylighting (along with using the VrayDirtTex) and have been successful. Just wondering how else it can be effectively used?

I think that means what the ambient light will affect. So if you set it to affect gi only, it will brighten just the gi, or just the direct lighting, or both.

Right, but why would you want to brighten GI like that? That's what I don't understand. I thought the ambient light was designed to be a quick alternative to GI.

Normally you don't want to do that, of course, but sometimes it is useful for "artistic" purposes, whatever these may be.

The alternative I found useful with amb light was on fur, typical dome light takes way too long...of course it doesnt look as nice but renders at a fraction of time.

Using standard vraysun&sky/gamma2.2, we often would like to lighten up the shadow areas a bit. Also i would love to have more blueish light from the sky in the diffuse/shadow areas. Is this the one for using an additional VrayAmbientLight?
