  • Vray and 64 bits processor ?

    Hi all !

I would like to know if there is a possibility to make Vray working
in 64 bits using "opteron" power !!

I do have a bi opteron, I'd like to use it fully !

Would it be necessary to have a new WindowXP for 64 bits platform
and with a new version of Max also working in 64 bits to make Vray
    working in 64 bits ???

What would be the result ? Would it be worth ?

    Bye Gael

As far as I know the AMD64 supports all 32bit task and is very fast with them. That's how they came to there 3800+ with only 2.4 GigHz.
Anyhow the new compilers are out, and they will improve speed up to 15%.
Max is a 32bit program, not yet 64bit, maybe next release. Let's wait till WinXP64 is out. Win2003Server is available as a 64 bit system optimized on AMD64. You can download it directly from Microsoft for testing. Would be interesting the a Test with Vray.

        Well !

        You confirm what I thought.
So 64 bits power is not for tomorrow...So bad !

What about Windows 2003 server, I don't really want to test it and as you
say if everything doesn't work in 64 bits, there may not be very
        compatible.

We must wait for the next generation now.

For OPteron tests, I have 2 processors 242 (1.6 Ghz)
it is slightly faster than my 2 MP 1800+ (1,53 Ghz),it is the same speed...

I'm not satisfied, I did trust the company which sold it to me...I should
        have not.

        Thank you !
        Bye

Well it will maybe be faster, because microsoft is on hurry to catch the delay as the linux community gain fast knowledge for 64 bit server
          base on the opteron.
that's why they release a beta of 2003 server 64.
see this article in french :

            Thank you Fredc,

Very interesting article. The other ones too ...

Well as I said before , I don't really want to test the beta version of
            microsoft server 64 bit.
If Microsoft delivers a stable 64 bits system, yes I take it, but
what about Max and Vray, will they follow the train ??

If we have to wait one of them, the 64 bit power may be long to
            be used.
Hardware Technology development is still faster to develop than
            the software one...

What the weather like in Paris ?

            Bye

Just read yesterday an article (heise news) that says Intel will switch to 64bit Processors soon. They have everything ready but wait till MS comes with WinXP64.
They will show first example of there new Product line on the Cebit fair in March. It says also that Intel uses the AMD64 technologie because the have deal on that with AMD. They can't really tell if this is the long waited for precott or a smaller Itanium, but it's deffently a Desktop Processor for up to 2 CPUs with downward compability to 32bit.

I think that makes it clear, 64bit is the future and nobody can do anything agains it... so hurry up Developers...

hey computer is all about marketing the technoloy !

every year for almost the same price they sell you
the ultimate machine that last ultimate for 3 month.
i guess it's more worthy to buy entry to medium level but
every 6-10 month. u gain power plus still have a box that
can always do some useful stuf when u wait for renderings...
