How do caustic work? I know how light plays with water and glass, but would you enable it for any other reason? Does it make light and glass generally be more accurate if it was enabled? What the improvement be worth the render time increase?

I am asking because this guy "http://www.evermotion.org/tutorials/show/7880/making-of-abandoned-building" has it enabled, but his scene is pretty typical. When I have time I can do some testing, but I thought I would ask the brainiacs first.
