  • Use a "workstation" as a renderslave

    Hi.

I have a laptop with a copy of 3ds max installed as a "workstation" and not as a renderslave.

Is it not possible to use this machine as a renderslave even though i have installed the full version of 3ds max.?

Of course it's possible to use it as a render slave; it has all the necessary files. Just make sure you run a backburner render first.

Ok. So what you are saying you can't use the distributed render when having 2 workstations.? That was my question.

So do you mean that it is only possible to do it through backburner.?

I believe Vlado was telling you that:

A: Yes, you can use DR between any two machines, regardless of whether they were installed as workstations or render slaves. A render slave installation is generally a subset of the full installation so you should be just fine.

B: No, you do not absolutely have to use Backburner when rendering with DR, but running a basic Backburner job to the new slave is neccesary before using DR with it. I'm not completely tech-savy on this, but I believe running Backburner once sets up files needed for DR or something like that.

If I screwed up something here, I'm sure Vlado will correct me...

                OK. Thanks.

What is the approch for setting up DR between two "workstations".?

Do you turn on 3ds max as you normal would do on a workstation on the "slave" computer or ???

What about plugins considering this setup.?

Sorry, but I am a bit newbie on this area..

In order to set a DR job between two machines you have to enable DR option on the main machine (http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/200R...tm#distributed), set the IP of the slave machine in the server name list and start DR spawner on the slave machine. Which can be done from here: Windows Start menu>All Programs>ChaosGroup>VRay for 3ds max...>Distributed rendering> Launch V-Ray DR spawner.
More information about Distributed rendering can be found here: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/200R..._rendering.htm

You do not need to launch 3ds max on the slave machine. When you start V-Ray DR Spawner it will automatically start a 3ds max dummy which you'll see in Task bar. It will need about 20 seconds to load after starting and it will be ready to use.

What about plugins considering this setup.?
You do not need to install any additional plug-ins in order to set your DR job. But if you are using any plugins inside 3ds max you shoudl make sure that you have them installed on the salve machine as well.

I have a new problem. I have bought a new laptop (dell m6700) which I would like to to use as a renderslave.

But I can't PING my laptop. Is there something "you" always should do when you buy a new pc and would like to use D.R.?

I can ping my Main computer from my laptop but not the other way around.??

Turn off all the various windows firewalls and so on! I must say I found windows 7 far more annoying to network with other computers than windows xp was.

That helped a little bit. Now my main computer can find my laptop with ping.

But when I start render in 3ds max (DR).

                          It says:
server 192.168.1.31: scene loaded: starting render.
                          Server 192.168.1.31: Rendercompletet
warning: renderhost m6700 (192.168.1.31) is not responding.

What is now wrong.?? Why does has to be so difficult...

Make sure that you have identical V-Ray versions on all machines.
If that doesn't help, please find vraylog.txt file (which you can find in your temp directory or if you type: %temp% in the windows explorer) on your laptop machine after you run the DR job.
                            Then send it to: suuport@chaosgroup.com
                            Best regards,

                              It is.

I have read somewhere that it maybe be a problem because of using 3d mouse from 3dconnexion. Is this true.?
