  • Multicasting for Vray?

    Hi,

We are in the process of upgrading our network to have a huge speed improvement and one of our question was to figure out if we need manageable switches or if normal smart switches where enough.
One of the reasons the tech guys advised us to go for manageable switches is to use multicasting.

But from my understanding, to use multicasting, it has to be supported by the software.
So I was wondering if Vray was able to use the feature or if it was planning to implement it.

It's true that sending once the info from the server (Max files, xref, maps) and split it at the switch (to send it to 50 nodes) should be the way to go instead of having the 50 nodes asking exactly the same info (and having the server overloaded even with 40Gbps teamed NIC and expensive SSD in Raid Array)

    Thanks

    Stan

    Hi,

Unfortunately multicasting is not yet supported by V-Ray.

Some of the guys here did a few experiments with multicasting and broadcasting, but weren't happy with the results. Instead, we developed another system that is closer to torrents which seemed to work much better. It is not included in V-Ray yet though.

ChaosGroup is one of the last companies that actually invents things. This is why they win.

If you do this, you will be the first render engine to do this (Renderman (the "normal" version) do not do this).

Would this require a managable switch/multicasting set up, or would it run on a normal switch setup?

                It's a normal setup.

To explain a bit, the guys found that while multicasting itself works, the error recovery in case of lost data (and some percentage is usually lost) is very expensive. It is not like video streaming, where dropping a frame or two is perfectly acceptable...
