    Hello,

could you juste confirm me that 3dsmax photometric lights are very very very slow to render ?

is there going to be any improvements to the vrayieslights in the future ?

    thanks

  • #2
I wouldn't say they are very very slow.
Instead I would say that the VRayIES is faster
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

What kind of improvements would you like to see?

      Best regards,

I gues vrayies are faster but you can't get softshadows and it seems to illuminate too far most of time, It would be good to have a radius option similar to the vraylight in sphere mode and some control for the soft shadows

VrayIES CAN produce soft shadows...and all you need to do is open the IES file in a text editor and change the size parameter [there is a thread on this forum explaining how to do it so have a search]
IES lights are based on real world light calculations so they are what the should be.

Not sure what you mean about your other comment?? Can you clarify better what you mean

We had somme situation where you have a vrayies in a room and you get a hard shadow in the livingroom coming from a door opening of the room where the vrayies sit......seems like the vrayies illuminate too far but again maybe the intensity value was too strong\ wrong exposure so it react as it supposed to.... Ill have to check and test on that, thanks fro your response.

open the ies file and you'll see this at the start: (important bit bolded)
              "IESNA:LM-63-2002
              [TEST] U100000_0
              [TESTLAB] ERCO Leuchten GmbH
              [ISSUEDATE] 20-11-2007
              [MANUFAC] ERCO Leuchten GmbH
              [LUMCAT] 22405023
              [LUMINAIRE] LC Downlight
              [LAMPCAT] MRC16 50W 10°
              TILT=NONE
              1 900 1 19 1 1
              2 -0.051 -0.051 0

thats the scale of the light. for some reason, they're all set to minus values on most files i see - which max doesnt read properly, it treats as 0.

the first is units (1 is feet, 2 is meters)
the last 3 are width, length and height.

vray uses the ies size whereas max can override the size - It's not an issue with vray, it's with your ies files.

Thanks for the info, just remember saw and participate in a previous and similar thread, I think we have some ies files that are old and probably not appropriate, they we're working, to some point and comparing the info of your files you just gave me it doesnt look quite the same, do you have a link for a good ies library or interresting files that are working minus the little change to make in the files concerning the negative values.

                best regards.

Can you post an example of one you have? Nearly every ies file from a manufacturer has the units set up wrong - some have extra line breaks, some dont have any, but those numbers are the same in every file.

I'm pretty sure I replied to it, bolding the numbers that had to be changed. If it wasnt you, it was one of the other multiple times i've posted it. Your ies files are fine.

The units are the 7th number after it says tilt=none, and the sizes are the 3 after that. The ones I bolded. Your first file is set to 2 -0.090 0.000 0.000, and the second one is set to 1 0 0 0

One has minus values, and one has no size set at all.

Btw, V-Ray 2.4 gives you the ability to adjust the light shape from the UI... no need to edit files anymore.

Yes, it's out, but you might want to wait until next week - we discovered some issues related to proxies, which should be fixed on Monday.
