  • Vray 2.40.01 VrayProxy size x2 + VrayProxy Crash Max at Light Cache

    Hello,

I just updated Vray and it seems that when I export a mesh in a VrayProxy the size is the double from what I got with Vray 2.30.01.
    I'm using 3ds Max 2013 x64.

Does anyone have the same issue?

I found this change because a scene previously working now just crash when doing the light cache. If I remove the VrayProxies then it's fine. So I'm making some test to be sure of the issue.

Ok, I just found the bug.

So for a test just download this:
    http://www.ronenbekerman.com/18-free-3d-trees-birch/

I tested it with the Birch_02.
    So open it.
Export it to a vray proxy.
    Hit Render.
    Crash.

Here is the dump file if it can help and every other file I am able to give.

As a test I tried to create a box (with turbosmooth) in a scene, do a vray mesh export et hit render but it was working.
So maybe it crashes if the mesh is too heavy or something...

I will reinstall the old vray waiting for a fix.

Thanks for the pointer; looking into it now.

[edit] It will take a while though, this thing will download in 6 hours.

It is possible that you enabled point cloud export for the proxy when you created it?

      Best regards,
      Vlado

Here is a link with only the birch 02.

I did check the point cloud export.
But since the size was the same I didn't thought it was the source of the issue.

I'm back at 2.30.01 and everything works fine.

If you don't find anything I will reinstall 2.40.01 just to do the test.

Hm, I can't reproduce this; here is what I do: open the birch .max file; right-click on the tree > export .vrmesh with auto-convert to proxies; render => all is fine. I also tried importing the proxy in a clean scene - also fine.

Can you also get me the .vrmesh file that crashes?

Other than that, I'll try to decipher the crash dump.

[edit] The only way I got it to crash was if the "point clouds" option is enabled when the proxy is created - that's why I asked if it is on or off (must be off).

          Best regards,
          Vlado

Did you try to render the whole tree?

If I render only the bottom of it it don't crash (If I only have one VrayProxy).

Here is a VrayProxy exported with 2.30.01 which didn't work with 2.40.01.

Have you an idea why the VrayProxies takes 2 times much space with 2.40.01?
I tested all of this with 2 computers (but I think it won't help a lot).

Thanks for the file; you exported the proxy with point clouds in it. That's what causes the crash, and that's also why it's twice as large.

Will fix the crash of course, but for the moment, make sure point clouds are disabled when you create the proxy (this will return the size to normal), or else set the point cloud "Level multiplier" to 0.0 in the VRayProxy parameters (this will stop it from crashing).

There is a separate issue with the "Scale" parameter; will fix that too.

              Best regards,

                Ok, Thanks Vlado.

I will try to reinstall Vray 2.40.01 later and do some test.
                I will keep you updated.

But I think I tested the export without point Cloud just to see if the file was large or not and it was.
I will double check it today .

                    Okay, it's working like that.

                    Same with the file size.

Will just have to rexport a bunch of proxies now .
                    Thanks again Vlado !
