  • Complex Fabric

I'm trying to recreate these cushions with these multi-layered fabrics.

I'm fine with making the base fabric with a standard vray material but there are these additional layers of wool or thread woven on top of this base. I'm struggling with an approach to these.
Is it worth me investigating Vrayfur or 3ds max's hair & fur to do this (it sprung to mind because the wool looks so fuzzy and you can see fine strands at the cushion edges)?
I've never looked into either before but don't mind spending a lot of time on this, I just don't know if I'm heading in the wrong direction with a hair & fur system.

    Anyone have any tips please?

well, that works not that bad at all.

i used a density map on vray-fur. you may combine with a length map also to get fur around the edges where you need.

i work here in mm. depending on how close you are to the pillow, i used 0,01 to 0,03 mm for thickness.

Could displacement work for the very close interwoven threads on the cushion. I'm wondering if you could use the old script that pushes a lot of splines around a defined set of points, can't remember the name of it now for the threads that sit more above the main base. Maybe some vray fur to each of these to create a more organic feel. Sounds like you have lots of experimenting to do Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. My attention's been diverted from this for the time being but once I get back to it I'll post some results (probably involving a mix of Vrayfur & splines).
I'll have a look for that script too. My only worry is that because I've been using Marvelous Designer to model cushions recently the non-quad output is going to limit what I can add in terms of geometry. Will have to see
