  • Want to find what's causing prepass when rednering

I have a scene with no interpolation on my reflection/refractions. GI is turned off.

I am getting a pre-pass at the beginning of each rendering and I can't figure out why. There are Vray2Sided materials in the scene -- will do they cause a prepass?

I don't think I have SSS2 in this scene. There are so many materials though and maybe I missed something. Is there a fast way to find out?

Update: I tried to render with the automatic override material set to a Standard material. I still get a slow pre-pass phase.

If I turn off reflections/refractions in Vray global settings, it will get rid of the pre-pass. But I don't understand how I can have any reflection/refractions if the Override material is set to standard.

      This is very confusing.

I think it was just interpolation after all -- buried in one of dozens of multimats that was difficult to find. Although I'm curious why the override material wouldn't have voided that out.

for future perhaps use Olly's VMC script. You can get rid of interpolated (and most) other settings in a couple of seconds, even in complex scenes. It has saved me headaches in similar scenarios...

Definitely have to second that ^

            It's a brilliant script.

That's very interesting - we could investigate what is the exact reason for the mystery prepass if you are able to share the scene with us.

VMC is a great script, that's true!
And combined with Zorb Modifier script, together they will let you manage everything in 3 clicks.
