  • Vray and Standard materials?

Does Vray like or dislike Max's standard materials? If iam right the vray materials are only for certain areas where you need photorealsim right, reflection etc. Iam just wondering cause i just want a small glossiness in my scene and no real reflection so can I use max standard materials to achieve what I need and not running into problems?

    thx

yes you can....but my experience is that vray mats are easier to control and render faster then standard mats when it comes to relflections.....

you can use both however......I never had any porblems w/ standards and vray.....

        Another thing i noticed...

Sometimes Vray doesnt want to render bump maps? Its really weird, sometime the show up and sometimes its too darn flat? Any suggestions. my bump is set on 300 with black and white image?!?

        cheers

it could depend on your lighting......I found that to be a bit of an issue as well....if the bump needs to be pronounced and it's somehwhere prominent in your scene, you're probably better off by using displacement...

Your problem with bump is probabely because you're using GI to light the scene. Bump only shows up if you use reflections/highlights on your mat or if you put a light on it to show the bright/dark side of the bump. With plain GI skylight and a single color material you won't see much of the bump because all sides are almost equally lit.

I've had the same proble with bumpmapping. Specially when I was using a mix material with two VRay submaterials. Suddenly my bumpmaps became invisible. And they had reflections, so, I still don't know if it was a bug or if there was a logical explanation for it...

It can also depend on the angle at which you are viewing the object, bumps look much better when seen straight on, as the normals of the object becomes parellel to the camera the bump starts to disapear.

yeah, at step angles bump maps are almost useless...I usually use a bit of a displacement map at that point if I really nees to see the bump.....
