  • Texturing Vray Fur

I want to use Vrayfur for some grass and have had mixed results in teh past. Want to apply a bump map and/or tex maps to the individual blades but cannot seem to get an image to map correctly onto the blades no matter which I way I try.

I get images stretched in all directions but cannot get a simple square checkerboard map to show up cleanly. Am I wrong in thinking this should be possible?

If so, what is the method?

Seems to me i should have w coordinates set to a channel, say 3 which is the default, then take my checkboard bitmap and assign it to channel 3 and use either UW or VW and it should show up nicely on the blades, but no such luck. What am I missing?

    Thanks

Don't feel defeated as you were never going to win with the tool you are using to create realistic grass.
VrayFur was never designed to make realistic grass for closeups & you will get much better results scattering some patches of proper modeled grass. eg Forest Pro, Vray Scatter, etc.
You would have to ask the Vray team if VrayFur creates a proper UV co-ordinate for Z-axis, but it wouldn't be needed for doing realistic hair or fur so it may not currently have the ability to do that????

      Hope this helps

I'm aware of the limitations of Vrayfur and have worked with geo as well - there is a reason I'm approaching it this way

That is basically the question I'm asking though.

Anyone at Chaos please let me know on this? I know Vlado confirmed before that we can map a gradient along the length of a vray fur strand, but I cannot get a regular map on there. It always looks stretched beyond recognition across the strand. Just not possible?

Have you changed the map projection to VW from the default UV?

Edit: Bah...disregard...I didn't read the previous posts properly.

It's not possible currently; VRayFur does not generate UVs across the width of the strands.

Thanks Vlado that would explain it.

So how does autograss manage to get textured blades? Is it not -basically - just prepackaged Vrayfur presets? It definitely seem to get at least some kind of texturing on the blades - at least vertical stripes to create a nice bump map.

Is there a way to replicate that with standard Vrayfur? Autograss is pretty good, but there are grass types that you cannot replicate with only 5 or 6 presets that are largely locked down.

No, autograss does not use the VRayFur primitives.

                    Unforutnately for the moment, no.

                    Best regards,

Thanks Vlado. The controls and behaviour are so similar I thought it was a plugin-ized version

                      Thanks for the quick answers.
