  • 3ds max 2014 slow material editor

I'm having some issues with the new 3ds max and the material editor, for some reason its so damn slow to render my materials compared to render the same material in 3ds max 2013. Its really a performance drop and sometimes its freezes and the only solution for this is force crash the program.

Is there anyone else who has the same problem and got a solution for this?

common cause of this is maps in materials taking ages to be found and loaded to display in the editor slots.

The wierd thing is that when I open the same scene in 2013 and look at one selected node tree with 3 material it takes about 5-10sec to render a preview but when doing the same in 2014 it takes about 1 minute.

What about disable view materials in viewports? In some cases, in some textures/maps/materials show in viewport really slow things down.

it can get very slow here too, but it's very inconsistent. it happens sometimes, and if it does the only option is to restart max. used to happen also on 2013 though, at least for me.

-I have tried to disable all bitmaps in viewport / tried to set them to 128px as maximum in viewport, but same result as before.
-Even tried to install the new service pack for 2014 but without result.
            -Bitmap paging is off.

Im just curious where the problem is, vray or 3dsmax.

I find everything in Max 2014 (like command panel) gets slow if RealFlow is open in the background. Not sure if this is your issue, but thought I would throw it out there for others...

I've definitely noticed that in 2014 my whole max tends to freeze while it renders out mat previews. In 2013 there was much less of an issue. This happens even with relatively simple materials and a small scene.

                    Hi,

It will be helpful if someone could post a .mat file to test with.
Then we will try to find the reason for this slow material sample update.

I have this issue a lot too but assumed it was just due to hi-res maps being used.
