Vrayshadowmaps?

Just wanting to find out more information about this option, is it possible to have the shadow maps saved out to a file? my understanding of using shadows maps is to precalculate shadows, but just curious and how it works in the background as far as were is saves the files and how it reads it, and if there any use for using the shadows maps elsewere?

V-Ray does not store the maps into a file; they are only kept in memory. Further on, V-Ray builds the map on demand as it renders; it will never build parts of the map that are not needed for a particular frame.

From my experience, they are only useful when rendering hair and fur, to produce a soft result without flickering and with relatively short render times.
