What exactly does the "exr use 32 bit output" option do? When checked, my test file was 33mb vs. 10mb unchecked. Both have all the channels and seemingly full range. Nuke histogram shows the exact same data for both images. Is it a legacy thing?

no, 32 bit exr means a compression of 32 bit, vs 16 bit half (which is the default) in some cases you want the 32 bit, for things like point position or zdepth.Dmitry Vinnik

well basically its much more data so its not as clipped off as 16 bit, I think it makes a difference for point world, when you are far from origin and or if you have negative values. Our comp td's always have asked for it to be 32 bit (pain to handle though)Dmitry Vinnik
