  • MAX 2014 Gamma out

I am rendering out still for an animation, but it's not saving it with the gamma. The save dialog box has the gamma grayed out, so how do you save with gamma 2.2 applied? I have been doing it in post, but I shouldn't have to, correct?

If you open the MaxScript editor and type
    Code:
    fileOutGamma
    what result do you get?

    Best regards,
    Vlado

        Welcome to automatic gamma land!
It depends on the format you are saving your images as to what gamma max "automatically" applies to it.
If you open up a max scene that is saved with 2.2 gamma you will notice max asking you whether you want to use "from file" or "system" settings. If you use the file settings with 2.2 gamma as the output gamma it will then change your system output gamma to 2.2 in 2014.
After you do that if you just need to be careful when you open a new scene that you use "system" and check that is says 2.2.
        Annoying right?

Yes. I have been doing it in After Effects. So, there is no easy way to save a jpg with gamma 2.2? I tried tiff and tga, too, but that was grayed out.

I tried a script, but it really mucked things up, so bad that I had to recover a backup.

                Just type
                Code:
                fileOutGamma=2.2
in the MaxScript editor and you'll be all set.

                Best regards,

good to know, thanks. I'll keep it at 1, because usually that is what I want, but this time was unique for me. It's odd that we don't have the flexibility to control our own gamma anymore.

That's one for a twitter related bit of giving out I reckon. Apparently it's something to do with the upgrading of LWF in mental ray but that's no reason to go buggering up other renderers!

I don't think it has anything to do with mental ray specifically; rather, it was done to force the users into a more or less standard linear workflow.

I don't know why it's greyed out on your system. Mine lets me change the gamma when I save the file, just click on override and then I can input whatever I like. Tested it just now on 2014 with stills and animation
                        Kind Regards,

I find sometimes when selecting maps in mat browser that it is grayed out, but then I just click on it and even though it displays grayed out, I can still click it

rendering out stills is when I am seeing it grayed out.
