Trying to understand... How less samples give me less noise?

Hi! Just came into this situation, I raised the subdivision on my vray light to 64, got a very nice almost noise free shadow, the render was set to DMC 1 min 14 max, still was a bit of noise, so I raised the 14 to 20..... And actually got noisier.... Lowered to max 7 and got it almost noise free, and actually render faster... How is possible that lowering the max samples actually gives me a less noisier render??

Don't get it...

Think of it as taking samples from the lights and putting them for AA. And if you AA color threshold is relatively high, the light may end up with less samples than before.
