  • 3Dmax 2014 Vector Map as a Displacment map?

    Is it possible to use the new Vector Map as a displacement map. I am trying it right now, but it won't work. Just curious

    It doesn't work on my side too - will add it as a feature into our system.

    Edit: Actually with VrayDisplacementMod in 3D Mapping Type with Vector Displacement option activated there is some Displacement but it doesn't look very accurate.

      Ups - one more update , if you pass Vector Map through Color Correction Map and plug it into VrayDisplacementMod it works without any issues

            Hmmm

            I tried it now with the color correct node, and it does work. On straight lines it works well, however on curved information it is odd? Take a look here. The *.AI was made in Illustrator cs6. Increasing the resolution in the vraydisp. mod. isnt changing much. Any idea?

              This is actually expected result- vector file formats don't have any anti-aliasing between pixels, the edge between the text and the background is very hard.
              In order to get such crisp displacement you have to increase the tessellation a lot - some filtering will also help out in order to get smoother results.

              Feel free to send us this scene for investigation if you have difficulties with getting a better/cleaner result.
