  • reflectionmapping like max

In a standard material I can put a raytrace reflection on my glass and use a mapping (background/texture) too (in case there is nothing to reflect), how do I do this with al VRayMap. So far I can only get a environment reflection map.

    Thanks,

    Pien

ya far as I know, you cant fake reflection and refraction w/ a vray mat like you can with a standard map.

I think what you need to do is use a VrayMat and turn up the reflections and then use the override option for Reflection/refraction in the VRay:: Environment rollout in render settings.

The problem with that is it only works in an outside environment. Which most of the time would probably be fine, but if your trying to use alot of reflection mapping to tone down on render times, then it becomes a problem.

Ill have to check and make sure im not talking out the side of my mouth...lol

          Mirror question in general

How do you know which map to use for a reflection? There are so many .. and many with the same name such as map13. Also I am shooting a image in a bathroom. the mirror is on the wall slightly camera right. Accross from the mirror is as shower which should reflect in the mirror. Instead the reflection is of a door which is a few feet from the mirror on the same side of the room. I do I change this? I tried to change the setting to towards away... and perpendicular.. which one would reflect what is in front of the mirror with the most clairty?
          Thanks

            explaination raytrace problem

I will try to explain my problem better.

I usually make visualisations of outdoor architecture. When there is an other building in front of the building i have to visualize, I make a picture of this building and map that on the glass. When there is a row of trees on the side if my building I map a row of trees in the glass. (so I make a different grass material).
With a vray-like material I cannot use both kinds of glass and 'raytrace' it too.

I tried to make vraymat glass and put a picture in the reflection slot but it looked funny (like the reflectionmapping was used as a mask)

The reflection slot in vray is used for the amount of reflection. If you put a checker map in it, the black parts won't reflect, the white parts will be 100% reflective.

You need to put your map in the environment slot of the material and select the appropriate mapping type.

ya it works alot like the raytrace material.

                  Hummm...

Every time I change the position of the camera I have to change all my mappings, because it still is a backgroundmapping. If I render a blowup every part of my reflection is in an other place. I want to use an UVW mapping.

                    oops

The blowup argument is wrong, but when I want to make an animation I have to make a backgroundanimation too.

Whatif you put the map in the materials environment map and set the mapping of the bitmap to 'screen'?

                        solved???

When I put my mapping in the environment slot and use 'screen' I can't use an UVW-mapping and mapping to texture doesn't work either ( a lot of tiny mappings instead of one big one). Sorry Flipside.

I kindoff solved my problem, if I put my mapping in the reflection slot and put override MAX's environment to white it looks like a normal reflection. The only problem now is to make a vraymat glass with an opacity of 1 (lika I did with standard glass)

Any ideas on that, IOR on 1,0 and refract on white is not enough. maybe realistic, still not see-though enough.

                        Regards,

                        Pien

Why donĀ“t you simply use the vray mat-wrapper with a standard material and and add a extra vray map where you need raytracing?

                          should work without problems.

                            replay

Of course I could do them separate but a combination is better. Then I dont have to check what is mapping and what is raytraced.
