  • v1.5 to v2.0 upgrade question

    We are about to upgrade our VRay from 1.5 to 2.0.

    Will our old projects still work fine with t he upgrade? Will the VRay render settings in old projects remain intact or will they disappear and be required to be reentered, HDRI's relinked, etc?

    Any other potential problems? We have ongoing projects so we need this upgrade to be as seamless as possible.

    Thanks,

    The sampling changed slightly from 1.5 to 2.x so your images will look a tiny bit different in noise and brightness. The only way you'll guarantee a seamless upgrade is to render your jobs through 1.5 - maybe keep an older copy of max on your farm with 1.5 for legacy jobs? The guys in Speedshape apparently had an amazing render farm setup using qube that would rebuild their render farm plugins setup depending on what the job required to guarantee 100 percent accuracy.

      It would be best if you find a way to render those projects with the original 1.5 - like John noted, there might be slight differences in the renders. The settings and everything will stay in the scene, no problem about that.

        Thanks guys;

        So Vlad, how would one do that? I have the dongle which has v1.5 on it. I just purchased v2.0. If we put v2.0 licenses on the dongle, I suspect we can no longer use v1.5. If I wait to finish the projects with v1.5 which could take a month or more, and VRay 3.0 comes out, I may not be able to get a license for the v2.0 we just bought.

        What is the best approach to move forward?

          No, this is not the case. Your 1.5 licenses will remain as they are.

            1.5 and 2 are both covered by the same license so you can use either. If you've got a single license then you can run multiple max's with both 1.5 and 2 at the same time on the same computer, but you can't for example have one computer with 1.5 open and a different computer with 2 open at the same time from that single license.
