  • RENDERING A MODEL NOT DONE WITH 3DSTUDIOMAX

    Hi all,

do you think is there any difference on the final rendering between a modell built with native 3DSTUDIO max tools (solids/surface), and a model done with others software such as rhinoceros3d or formZ and then imported as mesh (obj file) in 3dstudioMax?

Does it affect anyway the image quality or does occur any problems with Vray? Any Particular settings?

    ByeZ

I'd say maybe 90% of the time there is no problem. The other 10% is the following I've encountered. (I model in Maya)

1.) Normals get all screwed up and even though I correct them in Maya sometimes they come in screwy into Max. Eventually if its a complex model I slap on a standard material because I get tired of nic-picking at faces trying to make them face the right way. Why do I this? Unfortunately the Vray material isn't configured correctly for double-sided-ness.

2.) Even though I model in polygons a very few times Max will not recognize some of my faces and I'd have to fix the mesh in Maya and re-import. (I export/import using OBJ.)

The above hasn't slowed me down really. And as far as render quality I haven't seen a difference. Except alot of final renderings on these forums can kick my @$$ so I just bottle up in a corner and show my finals to myself. :P

Have u tried to enable the "force 2 side" option both in render and visualization settings?

not really, from rhino the best way to export iges 144 (0.01mm) tolerance.
this usually works very well (even on filled, trimmed surfaces)
But if u have trouble, u better save in mesh. Otherwise better not...
Because max will treat as a nurbs and u have a lots of cool controll over the surface approximation, which, with mesh u dont.

but(!) if u have npower's new wonder the rhino2max then just save as .3dm (only geometry!) and that will satisfy u in all meaning.

the only thing add, yes check the normals before export (dir)

but will I maintain the layers?

i think not (i dont know the npower doest it) but i dont believe.
              so usual way not.
and anyway max layer management is something quite different, I think, u wouldnt benefit it, as it benefits in rhino.

yes instead...I use layers to apply materials...It is very doing multiple selections with layers...especially with very detailed scene!!!

Is there other faster way without layers....this is the reason why I use obj!

I agree, but putting things on different layers takes few minutes if you have the right nameing system...(so u can easily select them, or even make slection sets)

If you use rhino, buy power rhino to max from npowersoftware. it's the greatest tool ever, and yes it keeps your rhino layers (altough with other names) so you can easily turn them off/on in max by using max's layer tools.

Before i used to mesh everything in rhino with each objects unique settings, but this takes a long time and it doesn't respect layers.

do u mean object name are saved into MAX exporting with IGES?

                      ThankU I'll tri

For Flipside: I know it is a very powerful tool...but costs a lot...and there is not an educational license...I'll try to ask them anyway!

                        Hi kafka,

I don't agree that it cost much. have you looked at the powerrhinotomax? Because it's a version of powertranslator just for rhino, and it's only 295$

You have no idea how easy and usefull this tool is. if you use rhino and max together, it's a must have tool. It will save you many many hours, and the quality will always be better than with manual importing.

I can see..of course...u can't imagine how much time I spend to get fine and at same time low polygons....but I Payed Rhinoceros3d 199$ and 3dstudio200$ as educational license...I am student..but I'll look up!

GULLPPPP I was watching at their site....But do u think the "Power Translators for MAX" include the tools Rhino2Max?

They sell Power Translators for MAX for 95$ as educational license..would be great!

Yes powertranslators is the ful app. Rhinotomax is a stripped version of powertranslator.
