  • Vray material to force 2 sided

    Hi all-

I have a EXREMELY detailed model of a car that a client gave to me to work on. It came as a .obj file. I have been testing the model with a vray material and like the results and am also satisfied with the render speed. As usual the normals are all over the place. I switched to a Standard material with 2 sided checked on and vray material in the reflection slot. The render slowed down to a crawl and the results were not very impressive, part of that may be my limited max knowledge I'm sure. There is no way in hell I can start picking polys and reversing the normals. Is there something that I am possibly missing? Is there anyway to force a vray material to become 2 sided???? I wish 3dmax had a "auto orientate" command like Lightscape has.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

as far as I know vrayMats are already 2 sided.....

Yeah, I heard that as well. There is even a 2sided button in the options menu but it still renders those normals that need to be flipped differently.

you could try to apply a normals modifer and tick unify normals...that "might" work.

have you tried the Vray material wrapper on the standard material?

isn't that supposed to speed things up a bit when using standard mats?

please correct me if i'm wrong...

aside from trying to unify the normals of the geometry you could also create a new "double sided" material and put your vray material in both slots.

I spent hours on this last night, no real solution yet

I did find that adding a shell modifier with 0 thickness worked good although it almost quadruples the geometry :P and I'm not sure what would happen in an animation double faces might be an issue, could work in a bind though.

Tried what Vance3d said too but it did not work too.

I applied a "stl check" modifer to the object and it showed a lot of errors, So I thought I would try to repair it as a stl there are many programs that aid in the repair process, Ztech Stl (about $500us) Is pretty easy to use and has some automation, maybe a little easier than fixing it in max but still a lot of work.

Anyways flipping normals sucks, hope we can find a way around it.

This may sound a little odd, but the other day i have a model with normals problem, tryed everything until i exported the geometry to acad and then again to max, the normals where ok.

                  You are wrong

The Wrapper is just a way of setting the VRay properties based on material, not object. It will not magically convert std materials to VRay materials.

                    thanks for clearing that up.

i didn't think it converted materials, i just thought it might have speeded up rendering reflections over standard mats... don't know where i got that idea from though.
i probably just made it up...

Uhm...strange...I use to import Rhino meshes in 3dmax and I solve the problem enabling FORCE2SIDE both in display configurationa and Render menu...Do you think is a bad solutions and time-waste?

                      Which way to follow?
