I have no experience with it, but I'm curious why there is so little information available on VRay Standalone. Couldn't that be the thing that makes the new pricing structure less shocking to people, since it will run on Linux machines, or are there just too many things that it can't do yet?

Simply because there are not that many people that use it - it is purely a command-line tool, without GUI of any sort, which would be unfamiliar to many 3ds Max users. Also, this is the first time that we include it with V-Ray for 3ds Max; it's normal that there are few resources. Other than that, it can render anything that V-Ray can, provided that it goes into the .vrscene file; some V-Ray for Maya users even render everything through the standalone. On the other hand, while the 3ds Max exporter supports many things, we still have more work to do on it.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I mean that it's not like the Maxwell Studio or the Octane standalone which are more like simplified 3D applications.
