  • Is vrayzdepth 32bit/floating?

We are using zdepth to apply DOF in post. Is the vrayzdepth pass floating or 32bit? On occasion, I need to push the zdepth in after effects to exaggerate DOF, but I seem to be getting banding in the grey scale zdepth.

And your composition in AE is 32bit?

    I haven't got any problems.

I'm confused (it is Friday!). I thought AE compositions 'were 32bit if you added 32bit files?!?!

Sussed it - I was being a mong!

Not by default I don't think. Under your "Project" explorer part, where it has all the footage there is a button called "8-bit", click that and change it to 32-bit.

Nope. At the bottom of the Project box, click "8 bpc." In "Color Settings" change the depth to 32 bit. It makes AE super slow when you do that though. This is also the place where you can change AE to work in Linear color space if you wish.

AE isn't getting super slow in 32bit mode. At least cs6 and cc are handling 32bit compositions very well. Of course it ain't same as working with 8bit, but the speed is just fine for me.

If you create a new comp in AE by dragging a file from the project window to the new comp button, that comp will take on the settings of that file. (FPS, Bit depth, etc.) Sometimes if you start a comp with some previs drawings or sketches they are in 8 bit and that's why your new 32 bit files aren't working right. Use the 32 bit file to drag to the new comp button and that comp should be 32 bit. (In my experience.)
