  • V-Ray 3.0 Alembic particle

    Hi

I have started doing some alembic particle exports from Houdini and rendering them in V-Ray 3 using the V-Ray Proxy loader. So far it's looking very promising! However I have found that when you render motion blur the duration multiplier doesn't work. You always get a full frame of motion blur even if you set it to 0.5, 0.1 or 5. Is this a current limitation?

Also is it possible to assign per particle normal data from the alembic file? this would be really useful.

    Thanks

OK, Thanks! I might try halving the amount of the embedded velocities in Houdini before I export and see if that has the effect of a 0.5 motion blur.

Done a test and found that you can control the motion blur length by adding a multiplier to the velocity channel in a VOPsop in Houdini before exporting to alembic.

Thanks for sharing - that information would be useful for us and someone else with the same issue.

I am currently trying something similar without much success. I am loading a .abc file via vrayproxy and struggling to get motion blur to work. The first time i just tried ticking the motion blur box on my vrayphysicalcamera and amazingly it worked perfectly... but froze at the end of the render, or crashed if i cancelled the render , this was on vray 3.00.03. I downloaded 3.00.05 and didnt get a crash but also didnt get any motion blur. Now I have gone back to 3.00.03 and frustratingly cant get motion blur to work again!

            any ideas?

I can send a stripped down file, and dropbox the .abc file

Yes, if you can send it to me at vlado@chaosgroup.com we'll take a look. Which application created the Alembic file, by the way?

              Best regards,
              Vlado

Just in case anyone had the same problem as me, the trick was to make vray think it was loading a sequence by renaming the .abc file filename_0000.abc and then in the vrayproxy filename slot change it to filename_####.abc

also, changing the fps when using ply2vrmesh.exe allows me to change the motion blur length without having to go back and re-export the alembic file.

thanks Vlado, all working perfectly now!
