  • How to: model/displace cigarette tobacco?

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to achieve a realistic and beautiful result for cigarette tobacco leafs.

    Something like this:

I tried modelling it and i tried displacement but somehow I dont get this natural look and the details - I am talking both material as well as shape here.

Any suggestions how you would go about this?

Thank you as always for any help.

U can make lots of high detail macro pictures of it then use one of those 2d to 3d programs to produce mesh. Then based on that u could model detailed model + zbrush details.

Hi, thanks for the idea. Not bad. Could work, actually. I never tried that technique.
Do you think Autodesk 123D could do it properly?

I used a displacement map here which I could dig out for you- but I didn't need to get as close as your reference images. Autodesk123D is great, you'll need a good lens though I think!

with that resolution it looks pretty convincing! great work!
it would be awesome to be able to take a look at the used map.
          thank you!

What about a particle system? make a few individual flakes. Then use mParticles in pflow to pack them. Only need to do a small amount for the front

Not to be a dick but cigar does not look like that its more of a rolled leaf rather then chopped tobacco.

What I would do in this case is model a few individual bits of tobacco, texture them and use something like multiscatter to place them around.

No worries Dmitry, I'm no cigar aficionado! I just used the the diffuse to displace:
