  • Scene States

I have been experimenting with scene states recently and found it to be surprisingly powerful, if a bit clunky. There are a few things VRay doesn't play nice with though like apparently camera settings don't get recorded.
The thing that really bugs me though is that you can't override the naming of files output the by v-ray framebuffer without applying a different render change to every single state.
In my case I have around 50 objects that needs to be rendered using 8 different material settings, in a few different camera angles. Setting it up using state sets I could in theory make it simple by setting up the states for each object, but the naming of the files becomes an issue since I don't want to use Max's built in file output. The only real solution I've found is increment the frame number for every state but that still requires over a thousand manual changes.
Soooo my question is, will VRay be able work with state sets in the future, and is it possible to fake it using scripting, by using the "scripted state" to change the output path before each render?

Also, does anyone use RP Manager or similar? It doesn't seem to have been updated in a long time so I'm unsure about buying it. Does it have support for outputting and auto-naming files with the v-ray frame buffer?

Which parameter is that? The one for the "raw image output" or for the "split render channels" one?

Shimakaze, I use RPManager and it is constantly updated. Grant (the developer) is very helpful if you have any questions or if you want any features added.
I think it does do auto-naming but I am not 100% sure.
I can't recommend RPManager enough to people. It has saved me hours and hours of time sending off renders manually.

Vlado: Yes, the V-Ray raw image file field specifically. I prefer outputting files to EXR that way, to keep all render elements and float intact, because I find that easier in my workflow. I have brought this up before, but what I'd really love is the ability to use variables similar to those available in the frame stamps for the raw image file names as well. (the ones like %vrayversion, %rendertime etc.) Useful ones could be for instance the name of the current camera, time and date, the current state set (or scene state), an incremental number based on an internal counter rather than the frame number, and so on. That way you could construct paths like "[output folder]\%camera\%frame - %filename - %HHmmss.exr". Being able to automatically alter the file names would make batch rendering much simpler.

jacksc02: I'll have to look into that closer then I suppose. thanks!

          Yes, will get to that.

Rpmanager is brilliant been using it for the last 6 years and cant function without it
and yes it does all sorts of incredibly complex auto naming and path building.
