  • face count limit

    hi guys
is there a face count limit in vray? cus i have a heavy scene (1.6 m faces) and i get a "vray exception" dialog all of the time...
i also have alot of displacement in the scene.
    thanks...

there wont be when the new version arrives in may

what you may be experiencing is running out of ram

If you are using 3D displacement you can try lowering or disabling the cache size, should give you some more headroom.

i would agree that it sounds like you are running out of ram. i had the same problem with a scene that had a lot of polys. On my computer with 2GB of RAM the limit seemed to be somewhere around 3mil polygons. on a machine with 1GB of RAM it was around 2.2million.

Try to render the scene with backburner...

I had the same problem, and have rendered with backburner, and seems that work ..

would it just be that with backburner you have some more RAM free'd up because its not loading the full MAX interface?

                Hi

You also might try the gigabyte switch.

Windows usualy is not made for such big memory things.
I don´t know where here in the formu it was described. there is a windows ini file, where you can make windows use more than 1.6 gig ram for your scene.

maybe someone other still knows , where to find the post for the switch here in the forum.

This might help until the new release with unlimited geometry rendering is at our fingertips.

                  In my little opinion

                  In my opinion

I found VRAY the best on the market except for this problem exceed of ram even if u have 2GB on your pc!!!

It's a big problem because rendering wiith vray seems to have no limit because it's fast with big amoung of polygons too, but over (I don't know how much) a specific number of poygons it gives this problem "vray exception" maybe I'm not a professional user and I've not a workstation I work with pc's with 512-756Mb of ram but when I decided to buy more ram I read that who has 1GB or 2GB on his machine has the same problem!!

Could someone explain how to avoid the problem of vray exception?

I have to say that I use 3GB options and It gives better results but I get sometimes (often) this problem again

                    Hi pengo,

As you can see in the thread you point to, a "normal" Windows system can only allocate up to 2 GB of memory to one application.

It is Memory, not RAM and that mean the bundle Windows create with RAM and swaped to disc space, this mean that a system with 512 MB of RAM using 2 GB of virtual memory and a system with 2Gb of RAM with 512 of virtual memory will crash because of out of memory error in the same situation.

With the /3GB switch some OSs will allocate more memory

If the poly count goes up because we are using copies of the same object, (for instance we are using geometry trees) perhaps we can use instancies of the same object instead of copies, and in Vray Render settings, System folder, check "instancied" instedad of replicate and have memory benefit from it.

Or wait til next month, when next version of VRay is announced to be released supporting unlimited unique geometry...

                      2 fermi

                      thanks for the explanation

but I have this problem more if I use instanced objects and instanciate )(on vray system panel)
I don't know why but it happens

I often get this vray exception (raycast and other) errors!
It is true that I use onyx models, rpc, and forest planes (architectural scenes) but not too much as u can think

                      bye
                      and thanks for the help
