  • Who can get this UNIVERSAL 2.4 LWF scene down to 5min render?

    Hi all

I'm messing with some different workflows, and this one in particular is intriguing to me.
It's a simple(ish) scene with a couple of boxes and some cylinders lit by only a vraysun/sky and setup for a basic UNIVERSAL LWF.

As you can see by the attached render, it's very noisy, a bit too dark in the dark areas and a bit too light in the light areas.
Also, it renders "long". Who think they can get it down to a 5 min or less render (keeping the general light intensity and glossy reflections and having a linear output) with a single pc AND CLEANER

    Here's the max 2014 file:
    universalscene.zip

Besides VRay2.4, it will also be interesting to see what VRay 3.0 can come up with for this scene.

I rendered with your settings and got 6 min. I then launched Solidrocks with "very Good" settings and got 1m 18.1s.

        Different camera angle?

I didn't do anything, except open it and hit render. But, I did rescale. I am opening it again, without rescaling, and I'll render again.

What CPU do you have Bobby? Is it overclocked?

With the file as is, I was getting more than 10 min on a standard i7 3930 and 32gb ram

Your 2nd image looks much cleaner Bobby. OK SolidRocks Aside, how can we get it QUICKER AND CLEANER?

Here, it is not being rescaled, which is odd that it changed the camera angle. Also, the previous ones were using Reinhard, and this one is linear.

Here are my tests with Vray 3.0. All Brute Force and Light Cache.
The first image is rendered as is from the scene.

Second one is rendered following this approach: http://www.cggallery.com/tutorials/vray_optimization/

Third one is Vlado's new "hybrid" universal settings using the Shading Rate parameter. I quite like this one. It might be a tad slower to render, but scene setup couldn't be simpler.

Bobby, you're using Irradiance Map, right? Could you please try switching to Brute Force for the GI?

                  Regards

Still some noise, but not bad.

I'd be curious to know a bit more about the settings on this one, it looks quite a good result to me.

why no reinhard burn? (it will render the same, as the color mapping mode is set to 'None', but faster)

on my workstation, the rendertimes looked like:

                            5m 21s < scene as opened
                            4m 1s < reinhard burn set to 0.05
                            3m 34s < embree enabled
                            3m 34s < MRI 20 enabled

Does this not mean you end up with a non-linear result?

                              Also what is MRI ?
