  • VRayDisplacement Modifier - would this be at all possible to do with this modifier ?

    Hi,

I was asked to extrude this particular piece of geometry (see attached) - I was provided with the .AI file but it was incredibly unusable in 3DS Max, so I thought of other possible solutions.

I had a go with VRayDisplacement Modifier but I kept getting very jagged edges (I'm sure I might have been doing something wrong) - but can anyone tell me if what I was trying to do would have been at all possible, or would creating a proper .AI have been the only way (actually, this object is made up of other graphics such as this and 'layered' one on top of the other) - it's just that the .AI creation will take many hours I know.

    Any ideas ?

    Many thanks.

    Hi,

Try to lower the Edge length value and run a test render again. It should add more detail and smooth the displaced geo.
Do you use high resolution image as map for displacement?

Other option could be to import the AI file directly in 3ds Max as splines and extrude each group of pieces separately.

      Hi Tashko,

Yes, I tried all of that.

      The edges were very jagged.

I will show some tests later because this would have been such a good solution if I could have got it to work.

Yes, other option importing AI was a nightmare ! (AI file very bad and needed total redoing).

      Thanks for your help.

It would be better if you could provide a scene and a screen-shot of the result you got in your environment.
Reference of the effect you are looking after will be also very helpful.

Thank you very much in advance.

You're better off tracing the outline of it manually using vertex snaps, otherwise you're going to run into issues with some of the lines running diagonally across the edges of a grid - the polygon flow is just subdivided in the wrong direction for a lot of the details in that piece of artwork.

            Hi Svetlozar,

Thanks for your interest, I'll send you something directly to chaosgroup.

            Many thanks.

            In the meantime, here is the sort of effect I was getting during testing (see jaggies along edge);

              Thanks

That seemed to be our only option only that this artwork and the time we had didn't to do this leave us with that choice.
