I got it today, hooked it up, and installed software. Tomorrow I'll run some benchmarks. Does anyone have a god VRay benchmark scene?

Not sure about a vray benchmark scene, but you could try running Cinebench perhaps?

Believe me, I could load it up, but a new PC is a good time to clean house. You would be surprised on what we don't need. I'm running lighting fast, so I'm taking things one step at a time. This 1 PC is running better than my 6 old ones together. I'm sure all the RAM in one place, no network slow downs, and the SSD helps.

                    • I don't know, the quad core cpu though a 4 ghz, still won't match the 12 cores from xeon.

ghz and cores don't mean much, depends on what architecture they are and whats in the rest of the system.

to give you a rough idea the i7 4790K (stock clock) scores average 11,347 on passmark benchmark where dual xeon 5650 scores average 11,741. if you were to OC the 4790k to even 4.4 GHz i'd bet it'd top the dual 5650 setup.
also with the 4790k you have a newer chipset (z97) , faster ram than the dell system, faster SSD (sata 3 (6GBs)) , better GPU with 2gb vRam and pci-e 3.

i guess the only way to know if someone has a similar systems to these 2 for a comparison but i know which i'd rather have.

                          • But, a poorly optimized scene on the best machine would run slower than a highly optimized scene on a slower machine. It seems both machines in question are comparable to each other, and I already made the purchase, so now I am going to spend my energy becoming a scene optimization ninja.

I don't want to start a debate here. However, recently I've asked to perform a rendering bench mark ( I was considering a new system ) between my old xeon x5650 2.66 12 core and the new 24 core e-5 2697v2. The result? it was exactly twice as fast. Yes newer technology is better, but imo core per core it is just that similar. (this is bwetween xeons though) for i7 the less more powerful cores are true.

It will be hard to say based on benchmark tests alone, they do perform better, and in fact single more powerful cores excel at things like simulations for example.

For me though, in rendering i7 3930 (stock) performs slightly less then xeon 5650, though being at a higher clock at default.
