Why wouldn't you charge them for a full 40 hour working week?

This is how I am handling it. I'll work on a month-to-month retainer, which is paid in advance. I will not work with their local competition in exchange for a guaranteed amount of work from them. So, I'll get paid for 20 hours a week, regardless of if they have work for me or not.

I think the post was about if they are giving him no work at all then the retainer would be equivalent to a 20hr work week - so half what he'd get paid for doing a job, for doing nothing (or working on other jobs and making way more than usual).

I'm just trying to plan for the Winter months, when things slow down. Basically, pay me $2,000 a week to be on call and I'll prioritize them and give them 20hrs. Pay a months in advance and I will not do work for their competitors.
