  • 3ds max vfb darker

    Hi Guys,

I have a problem that I am trying to figure out. When I save a render from the 3ds max vfb it saves darker then the rendered image.

See the examples below. maxVFB is the vfb rendered and maxjpg is it saved out to my hard driveClick image for larger version

Name:	maxjpg.jpg
Views:	1
Size:	49.6 KB
ID:	880647Click image for larger version

Name:	maxvfb.jpg
Views:	1
Size:	451.7 KB
ID:	880648

    My settings are

    gamma/lut 2.2 inside max

    color mapping = linear multiply
    gamma 2.2
    mode color mapping only

not sure if those are the best settings btw.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Cheers

Which 3ds Max version? Make sure the file output gamma is 2.2 as well. In 3ds max 2014, this option is no longer available in the UI, but you can set it from MaxScript like this:
    Code:
    fileoutgamma=2.2

You know whats weird, is if when I got to save the rendered jpg, in the dialoge box, I give it name, save as jpg if I set the gamma manual to 2.2 ( normal its set to Automatic ( Recommended )) then it saves it just the max vfb.

I dont understand whats going on.
        Cheers

            As Vlado already mentioned
use maxscript to set the gamma
Press F11 to bring up the maxscript listener and then paste this in there and press enter:
            Code:
            fileoutgamma=2.2
Or you can paste it in the small text box at the far most bottom left of the max window
            Kind Regards,
            Morne

Thanks guys. That seemed to work. Is that something I have to do every time I open a scene up?

Just curious why I would need to do that?
              Cheers

once you've done it, it will stay like that and you don't have to set it everytime

If however you open an old file and the gamma was set different with that file, it will ask you to change it or not. Don't change it and just keep what you set already. If you choose to change as per the old file, it will stay like that untill you change it back again
                Kind Regards,
                Morne

AD has some really strange defaults on things...
