  • Ceiling Grid

I have to create a ceiling grid, at a 45 degree angle. I was using this one (http://www.digitalxmodels.com/product/detail/679/3d_model_Ceiling%20Grid%20Generator_maxscript) but I now get an error. Any other good way to create the grid?

Plane > add edit poly > Select all faces > Inset by polygon > Extrude?

You would think, but MAX crashes every time.

Almost working, but I have to wait 10 minutes in between functions. Now, I got it extruded, but the wheel just spins.

Something wrong there - it's a really basic function. Might be worth binning your max install or at least it's ini folder and see if it behaves better?

what does the mesh look like?

I would assume there's a problem with the object and it's got tens of thousands of tiny useless polys.

I have never had luck with planes; dreadfully slow. It worked, but I wish the ceiling script worked; it cleaned everything up nicely even with irregular shapes, like I have.

Try the populate terrain script. Use it to create a "terrain" from your ceiling outline. Adjust the quads to the size you want. Then from there use same steps as John suggested > editpoly > inset edges > extrude

Or just turn your ceiling outline into a poly. Then use the graphite retopo tools to create the grid > inset > extrude
                Kind Regards,
                Morne

Can you send me the maxscript or post it here? I'll just fix the script. I can't seem to download it without going through a login process or whatever. Post or send me it: colin.senner@gmail.com and tell me how to recreate the error step by step and I'll patch it up.

The script poops out when you complete the process. Just pick a plane and pick process; this is when I get the error.

                          +1

This is what I'd do too.

Would the lattice modifier work? Create a plane> lattice modifier >struts only> Just play with the settings?

Another way to go about it :
Create a grid on the ceiling plane with this script : http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/grider (Pretty nice since it allows to cut with either edge lenght or edge count, at any chose angle, in all axis)
Select all newly created edges and use "create shape from selection"
Select resulting spline grid, make it renderable and play with the size settings.
