I haven't tried state sets yet, however another guy here in the office is giving it a go and having some issues. Mainly he's using it for different light setups for different camera angles.
When you save the max file, and open it again, it always opens in a certain state, not the last state you had it in.
But, the worst is when rendering with DR, it appears that the slaves renders a different state to the main pc. Can't seem to figure out what is going on. It has nothing to do with paths, because when we merge the file into a new scene without state sets and render with DR, then it's fine. Also setup up the state sets from scratch doesn't seem to help either, neither does restarting etc. The DR slaves always render a different state for some off reason.
Is there maybe a free 3rd party tool that works better than the max version of state sets?
