  • just looking for advise on a material idea

Hello and thanks for your time,
I'm trying to make a material that looks like the attached image. This is the best example I can find.
Basically there is a cruddy or oxidized patina around the outside and corners of all the form with a relatively cleaner and shiny surface outside it.
    any ideas?

Just use vray dirt as a mask and mix two different color/textures together. It will produce this result.

i did try that. It did not give me enough range or falloff showing the crud material. also it is brutally long to render. was hoping there was a quicker way

Bake few different AO to texture then blend in PS then use it in max.

Can you show us what you've got so far, screen-shot or a scene?
VrayDirtTex will slow down the rendering a bit but it should not be brutally long unless subdivs value is too high.
