the CurrentDefaults file in the MAX.vray folder suddenly started resetting each time max is started. it just started happening this morning after a clean installation of max 2014 and vray 3.0.8 a couple of months ago. is not really a big problem, but it keeps resetting my gamma settings back to default even if I manually edit the file. just a bit annoying..

This is very odd.
Have you tried to uninstall V-Ray, remove Max.vray folder and then install it again?
Please install the latest available V-Ray version 3.10.02 and let us know if the issue is still there. -
I tried, yes, but it doesn't seem to work. what I can't understand is from where max is getting its defaults, as both ini files (max.vray and designviz.mentalray) are manually edited. for example, both have gamma correction enabled, but max always starts with gamma diasbled..
3dsmax.ini is pointing at the right folder anyway, so I don't get why those settings are ignored. a max reinstall would certainly fix this, but I don't think I can't be bothered to do it, as it's just a bit annoying but not really a problem.Comment

Perhaps there is another 3dsmax.ini is that is being picked up? Might be useful to search your c: drive for 3dsmax.ini and see if anything comes up.
